The Encampments
Directed by: Michael T Workman & Kei Pritsker
Produced by: Matthew Belen, Michael T Workman, Munir Atalla, Kei Pritsker
Edited by: Michael T Workman, Mahdokht Mahmoudabadi
Executive Producer: Macklemore, Benjamin Becker, Hamza Badie, Ali Badie, Malas Entertainment

On a chilly April morning, dozens of students suddenly flooded Columbia University's lawn to create the Gaza Solidarity Encampment in order to pressure their university to divest from the US and Israeli weapons companies. Little did they know that this seemingly small act would trigger a global student movement, the likes of which had not been seen since the Vietnam War. With intimate access, THE ENCAMPMENTS follows the central organizers of the encampment as they are thrust into the spotlight, face violent police repression and suspension, congressional pressure, and a media firestorm, all while fighting to attain their goal of divestment at any cost.

ABOUT
Michael T Workman is an award-winning filmmaker born in Missoula, Montana, into a working-class family where making ends meet was a struggle. That upbringing gave him an intimate view of how a profit-driven society erodes human dignity, and revealed the necessity of subverting corporate-funded narratives in order to build a system that values people over profits. His work tells the stories of working people - those who are maligned or ignored by the media - with dignity, nuance, and emotional intimacy.

His latest documentary, The Encampments (2025), traces how a student encampment at Columbia University grew into the largest global student movement since the Vietnam War, after students were violently repressed when they demanded their university divest from weapons companies and Israel. The film won the Human Rights Award Special Mention at CPH:DOX, earned a Cinema Eye Honor nomination, and broke the box office record for highest per-screen average for the opening weekend of a documentary. Michael Moore called it “one of the best docs that I’ve seen in years.” It has since screened in hundreds of theaters and universities worldwide.

His documentary Meantime (2022) won Best Short Film at Telluride Mountainfilm, Best Short Documentary at BendFilm Festival, and the Vimeo Staff Pick Award at Palm Springs ShortFest. His earlier documentary, From Parts Unknown (2018), took the Grand Jury Prize at the Northwest Filmmakers’ Festival.

Workman holds a B.F.A. in Art from the University of Montana and an M.F.A. in Documentary Film from Stanford University. He has taught film production at Stanford University and the University of San Francisco. He is currently the Board President of Means TV, the only worker-owned streaming platform.

Users can upload photos, videos, love letters, genetic code, and other documents in the hope that future civilizations will have the technology to reconstruct their consciousness based on this information and upload their mind to an electronic body. When Linda’s husband passed away she created “mindfiles” for them so that they could one day be together in a different form. Composed of found “mindfile” footage, file_me_away is an experimental science fiction meditation on the desire to transcend one’s body and the razor-thin line between the ability of technology to improve human life or to catastrophically change society forever.
